Your Health is Important to Us

Personal care for a wheelchair user is essential for hygiene, health, and quality of life. Key points in this process include preventing pressure sores and promoting independence.

  1. Skin Health and Preventing Pressure Sores

Sitting in one position for long periods can lead to pressure sores (decubitus ulcers), resulting in infections and diminished quality of life.

– Frequent Position Changes: Shift your center of gravity every 15-20 minutes and change positions every hour to enhance circulation and reduce pressure. Lean slightly forward, sideways, or use support.

– Using Supportive Surfaces: Special pressure-distributing cushions (air, gel, foam, etc.) significantly lower the risk of pressure sores.

– Skin Check: Examine pressure-prone areas (tailbone, hips, heels) daily for redness, bruising, or tenderness. Take immediate action if issues arise.

– Keeping the Skin Clean and Dry: Clean and dry the skin to prevent bacterial growth and irritation, especially after any leakage.

– Choosing the Right Clothing: Opt for non-constrictive, breathable cotton clothing and wrinkle-free underwear to avoid friction and pressure on the skin.

  1. Personal Hygiene and Bathing Routine

Personal hygiene is vital for health and self-confidence. Bathing and toileting routines can be streamlined with appropriate equipment.

– Using the Proper Bath Chair: Water-resistant bath and toilet chairs with wheels aid transfers and provide a safe seating option during bathing.

– Accessible Bathroom Design: Features like grab bars, non-slip floors, and adjustable shower heads enhance safety and independence during bathing.

– Privacy and Independence: Encourage individuals to perform personal care independently when possible, while ensuring privacy during assistance.

– Skin Cleansing: A gentle bathing routine with soap and water prevents skin infections. Ensure skin is fully dried post-bathing.

  1. Other Important Care Areas

– Nutrition and Fluid Consumption: Adequate intake of protein, vitamins, and minerals is essential for skin tissue regeneration and wound healing. Regular fluid consumption maintains skin moisture balance.

– Chair and Cushion Care: Regularly clean and maintain the wheelchair and its cushion for hygiene. If the cushion is soiled, clean it per the manufacturer’s instructions and dry completely before reuse.

– Ease of Transfer: Lift rather than drag during transfers to reduce friction and prevent skin injuries.

– Collaboration in Self-Care Decisions: Consider the individual’s views and wishes in care decisions, making them feel valued and boosting their self-confidence.

Following these guidelines helps protect the physical and mental health of wheelchair users.
